Mir Mosharraf Hossain was born on 13 November 1847 in Lahinipara of Kushtia district to an aristocratic family. His father Mir Moazzem Hossain was a zamindar. Mosharraf Hossain was handcuffed by learning Arabic and Persian from Munushi at home. Later he went to school and learned Bangla. His formal education started at Kushtia School. He later studied at Krishnanagar Collegiate School till Class V and was admitted to Kalighat School in Calcutta; But he did not go further in his studies.

At the beginning of his working life, Mosharraf Hossain took care of his father's zamindari. He later became the manager of Faridpur Nawab Estate and in 1869 became the manager of Delduar Estate. At one time he left this job and returned to Lahinipara and later went to Calcutta in search of fortune and stayed there from 1903-1909.

During his student days, Mosharraf Hossain was the correspondent of Sangbad Prabhakar and Kumarkhali's Grambarta Prakashika. This is where his literary life began. Kangal Haranath, the editor of Grambarta, was his literary guru. Later his second wife Bibi Kulsum also made a great contribution in this regard. Mir Musharraf was one of the leading prose writers of the Bankim era and a pioneer of nineteenth century Bengali Muslim writers.

Musharraf's first novel, Ratavarti, was published in 1869, about four years after Bankimchandra's Durgeshanandini. He then wrote many books on poems, novels, plays, essays, autobiographies, textbooks, etc. His other notable works include Bishad-Sindhu, Basantakumari, Go-jiban, Udasin Pathiker, Moner Kotha, Niyati O Abnati, Zamindar Darpan Natak and many more. His immortal work Bishad-Sindhu novel tells the sad historical story of Karbala. His play Zamindar Darpan was set against the backdrop of the peasant revolt in Sirajganj in 1872-73.
